Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth

Sights, Smells and Sounds - My Trip to Cape Elizabeth, Maine

My eyes flew open to the sound of the roaring motor.  They fell upon miles and miles of Balsams.  The sky was bright blue with sea gulls flying like a mouse and a cat in a two foot by three foot room with no openings.  The sun shone cheeringly.  A brisk breeze brushed against me as we pulled into my aunt’s driveway.  She ran to greet my mom, my step-dad, and me.  Promise me we’ll have an adventure, my thoughts encouraged me.  I smiled, as a saying of yes.  My feet started to pull me inside and I waved goodbye to my  parents.

The next morning came before I knew it.  My cousin, Jenna, took me through a forest to show me Maine blueberries.  The forest was so beautiful, so lush and green.  I felt as if I were in the Amazon!  We arrived at the blueberry bush.  Even unripe they tasted delicious.

In the afternoon, I felt like a movie star, going across an ocean of red carpet and walking to the double doors leading to my movie destination.  It was the most spectacular movie theater I have ever seen in my life!  And the mall was even better!  The food court had delicious food that reminded me of home … only better!  It was huge enough to fit 5000 giant elephants!!!!!

I explored the shops of Maine from great pizza to exciting rented movies at night.  The best part was the houses.  They were spectacular, all different shapes and sizes, but only 1 thing in common: character.  They had everything that made you smile so wide that to go through even the biggest doorway you’d have to break it up into sections to get through.  And the people!  Such delightful people with bright, warm smiles!  I met a lot of friends there: Sarah, Franny, Abby, and Erin.  Adults, too! I knew right there that I loved Maine.

After a few days there, Jenna, Abby, and I went to the beach.  It was so much fun!  On a hot summer day like that, it was nice that the water was cold.  Jenna told me that it wasn’t always cold.  So that cheered me up. There were many cool shells and rocks to collect, and many yummy treats to eat at the snack bar.  Before Maine, I thought that Florida was the only glamorous beach on the East Coast.  But I was wrong.  Other than Florida, Maine had a really cool beach, and I would put it in the top 5.

Time flew, and it was time to go.  But we didn’t leave Maine just yet.  My parents and I looked at some houses for sale, and I got that same smile again.  We drove to a historical light house after that, Portland Head Light (see photo above).  It was very exciting … and windy!  I saw a bell against the wall and wondered why they would have a bell to help people drive away from the rocks if they had a light.  Probably because some people are blind, I thought.  Time flew and it was time to go … again.  For the night, I slept at The Embassy Suites near the airport, and it was AWESOME!

The next day it was time to go, for real.  It took a long time to get home, but it was worth the swell vacation!  I will never forget this great experience.
