Because of its many lakes and ponds, Piscataquis County is known as the "County of Lakes" and gets its name from the Native American word meaning "rapid water." Our region is a haven for those who come to enjoy fishing, camping, hunting or spending a quiet weekend at a summer cottage on one of the many lakes and ponds here. Four-season outdoor opportunities abound, with miles of snowmobile and cross-country ski trails available. As Wayne Huff, former President of Moosehead Manufacturing Company once said, "Anything you can do outdoors, you can do here in Piscataquis County." Whether it's hiking on the Appalachian Trail, climbing Borestone Mountain, visiting the historical Katahdin Iron Works, or hiking Gulf Hagas, the "Grand Canyon of Maine," it's all right here. Enjoy the opportunity to relax and reconnect by visiting areas where eagles still fly. Deer can be seen grazing in the fields.
