Deer Isle - Stonington Chamber of CommerceDeer Isle - Stonington Chamber of Commerce

Deer Isle is home to two villages, more than 100 miles of shoreline fringed in pink granite and spruce, seafood for sale right from the boat, State chess champions, a working waterfront that specializes in lobstering, an inordinate number of artists and plenty of colorful characters.  No traffic lights, no fast food franchises, and no need to hurry.  Spend a summer Sunday afternoon gallery-hopping or boat out to a deserted island with a picnic, rent a cottage for a month or just stay a night or two in a B&B, take in an evening of live jazz or Shakespeare at the historic Opera House; Friday's Farmer's Market offers fresh flowers, berry pies and a feast of organic produce.  Learn about Stonington's working heritage at the Granite Museum, take a watercolor workshop or just plunk down in a comfy chair with a good book, to the sound of gulls wheeling overhead and the distant drone of lobster boats making the rounds of their traps.  The island (connected to the mainland by a bridge) welcomes visitors year-round.  Plan to trade lots of activities for lots of peace and quiet, and unrelenting scenic beauty.
