With Valentine's Day fast approaching, the Opera House is pleased to present Portland String violinist Ron Lantz in concert with pianist Laura Kargul. The evening will feature a wide selection of French romantic music and will combine the Maine premiere of a little known masterpiece, the sublime Sonata for Violin and Piano by early 20th century composer Jacques de la Presle, with a fresh look at the well-known and universally beloved work, the great Sonata in A Major by Cesar Franck. Complementing these two large scale works will be a set of smaller gems, among them several passionate songs by Liszt and Faure that Lantz and Kargul have transcribed for violin and piano. There will be plenty of sweet desserts on hand tonight, champagne too. Come celebrate the season with us. Concert at 7:30 p.m., doors for seating open at 7 p.m. Tickets $15in advance or $18 on the day of the performance. Formed in 2006 by bandleader Paul D'Alessio after an inspiring visit to Cuba, Primo Cubano recreates the authentic feel and flavor of Cuba's national music, the SON. Primo Cubano plays traditional Cuban dance music dating back to the turn of the 20th Century. Son is the most popular style to come out of Cuba and is the primary contributor to the blend of Latin styles today known as Salsa. It was first a music of the country people and eventually migrated to Havana, where it was urbanized and began to draw a wider audience. The 5 members of Primo Cubano always transport us to a steamy dance floor somewhere south of here. Tickets $10 in advance or $12 on the day of the show. Doors open at 7:30 p.m., music at 8 p.m. For tickets phone the Opera House box office (207) 633-5159 or go online at the Title link above. Event #8035 Map + Directions

Roots rock reinvented. Over the past three albums and five years, Toronto's Celtic rock band Enter The Haggis has found itself at the center of a grassroots success story ever teetering on the brink of mainstream success. From playing Celtic festivals to headlining them, and from the festival circuit to selling out multiple nights in rock venues, ETH has blazed a path with heavy and almost constant touring up and down the East Coast, to Canada, the West Coast and back again, winning over success one fan, one town, one region at a time. The band has made waves in the genre, landing high Billboard and iTunes World Music chart positions as well as major television appearances on shows like Live With Regis And Kelly, A&E Breakfast With the Arts and PBS' popular program Out of Ireland, with its multi-influence style of Celtic rock. It's the kind of overall sound and devotion package that has created not only die-hard fans, but "Haggis Heads" that follow the band from gig to gig. A perfect warm up for St. Patrick's Day. Concert at 8 p.m., doors for seating open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets $20 in advance and $25 on the day of the performance. For tickets phone the box office at (207) 633-5159 or click the Title link above. In the decades prior to the 1960s, through the work of such avatars as Woody Guthrie, the Weaver and Pete Seeger, folk music was identified with sociopolitical commentary, but the idiom had been forced underground in the Senator Joe McCarthy witch-hunting era of the late '50s. By the time Peter, Paul & Mary arrived on the scene, folk music was viewed a side-bar to pop music. Peter Yarrow, Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers came together to reclaim folk's potency as a social, cultural and political force, but few could have realized how fervently and pervasively the group's message of humanity, hope and activism would be embraced. Tonight we welcome Peter Yarrow to the Opera House stage. Join us for this special evening. Advance Tickets $25, day of show tickets $30. Since their first recording in 1998, the Austin-based Hot Club of Cowtown have grown to be the most globe-trotting, hardest-swinging Western swing trio on the planet. The first American band to tour Azerbaijan, they have opened stadiums for such artists as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and continue to bring their brand of western swing to a wide range of festival audiences all over the world. But for guitarist Whit Smith, fiddler Elana James and bassist Jake Erwin, it has always been about staying true to their roots. Remaining willfully out of the musical mainstream, Hot Club of Cowtown have created an international cult following for their sonic personification of joy and unique sound inspired by their namesakes: "Hot Club" from the hot jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli's Hot Club of France, and "Cowtown" from the Western swing influence of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. In an ever expanding body of work, Jens Kruger (banjo, vocals), Uwe Kruger (guitar, lead vocals) and Joel Landsberg (bass, vocals) personify the spirit of exploration and innovation that forms the core of the American musical tradition. Originally from Switzerland, the Kruger brothers began playing North American folk music at an early age and were particularly inspired by the recordings of Doc Watson, Flatt and Scruggs, and Bill Monroe. In the days since, even Doc Watson has said "the Kruger Brothers are just about as fine a band as I've ever played with, I love to play with them." The Bluegrass Journal calls them "nothing short of magnificent." Nashville Public Radio has called the Kruger Brothers "one of the most creative, spiritually minded, musically gifted, soul enriching and life affirming bands to ever come down the pike. They give new meaning to the phrase 'the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.'" Don't miss this evening of unforgettable music at the Opera House. Advance tickets $15, day of show $20.
