In what is becoming the unofficial start of the Maine cycling season each April, the Great Maine Bike Swaps will return again this spring to the campuses of the University of Maine in Orono and the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Cyclists of all ages and ability levels will have the chance to buy and sell bicycles - or do both - with a percentage of the sales going to support the programming and educational efforts of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. Orono Famers' Market (Summer) runs from April 30 to November 19, 2011 and is held on Saturdays in the Steam Plant parking lot after Commencement in mid-May and until Homecoming in mid-October from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is also held on Tuesdays from the 4th Tuesday in June to Last Tuesday in October from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In addition, before Commencement (in May) and after Homecoming (in October), the Farmers' Market will be held at the Winter location in the Pine Street Parking lot in downtown Orono. The Orono Farmers' Market (Winter) runs from December to April on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to noon. Event #1070 Map + Directions

Since winning the Paolo Borciani competition in Italy in Spring 2005, the Pavel Haas Quartet has performed at the world's most prestigious concert halls and recorded three award-winning CDs, receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Recent highlights for the Quartet include performances at Carnegie Hall, Lucerne Festival, Vienna Konzerthaus, Barcelona Palau de la Musica, BBC Proms, the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg and performances at the Louvre, Paris. The Quartet recently toured Australia, the USA and also Japan, where it recorded a concert of Janacek and Haas for NHK television. Most recently, the Quartet was awarded the 2010 Special Ensemble Scholarship of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust. Based in Prague, The Quartet takes its name from the Czech composer Pavel Haas (1899-1944) who was imprisoned at Theresienstadt in 1941 and tragically died at Auschwitz three years later. His legacy includes three wonderful string quartets. Program: Tchaikovsky Quartet No. 1, Op. 11, Shostakovich Quartet #7, Op. 108, Schubert Quartet in D minor "Death and the Maiden." Spirit of Uganda presents riveting programs of music and dance for audiences of all ages. To the melodic tones of standing drums, with dramatic choreography, bright, layered rhythms, and gorgeous call-and-response vocals, a vibrant cast of performers, aged 8-18, bring to life the sounds and movements of East Africa. With Artistic Director Peter Kasule as Master of Ceremonies, Spirit of Uganda celebrates the cultural roots and newer offshoots of this lush and diverse nation. Ambassadors for Uganda's 2.4 million orphans, these children personify the resilience and promise of Africa's next generation as they promote awareness of Uganda's dual crises of AIDS and civil war, and raise funds to support themselves and others displaced in their homeland.
