Two Hooked Rug exhibits at the Saco Museum. All Marked Out celebrates the hooked rug innovator and entrepreneur Edward S. Frost, who launched a rug-pattern business right here in Biddeford, Maine, in the mid-19th-century. Originally presented at the Maine State Museum in 2006, Rugs All Marked Out features rugs, burlap patterns, and metal stencils from the Maine State Museum collection. The original exhibition will be enhanced with Frost rugs and patterns from the Saco Museum's own collections, all recent acquisitions. Also on view will be modern hooked rugs by members of the Maine Tin Pedlar, a group of local hooked rug artists named in honor of Frost. Both exhibitions will be on view at the Saco Museum January 14 through March 24, 2012. An opening reception for both exhibitions will take place at the Saco Museum on Friday, January 13, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This reception is free and open to the public. Event #7753 Map + Directions

The Dyer Library will host three Kotzschmar Jr. organ concerts the first weekend in February. Organists John Sullivan and Seamus Gethienker will play a series of music and demonstrate how an organ works. Children will be able to touch and see organ pipes in action. The original Kotzschmar Organ, which resides at Portland's Merrill Auditorium, is the oldest working municipal pipe organ in the United States. In recognition of the organ's centennial in 2012, Kotzchmar Jr. is traveling around for celebratory performances. This free series of children's concerts will take place in the Deering Room at the Dyer Library on Friday, February 3, at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, February 4, at 10:30 a.m.; and Sunday, February 5, at 1:30 p.m. A major part of this program features the portable, demonstration organ that Friends of Kotzschmar Organ had designed and built by David Wallace, specifically for educational purposes. The organ, affectionately known as "Kotzschmar Jr.," has been constructed with exposed pipes and Plexiglas panels so that children and their families can see the inside workings of the organ and play the instrument by manually pumping air to its pipes or by observing the electric blower do the work. It also provides a concrete example of how sound is produced. Friends of Kotzschmar Organ's goal is to give every child an understanding of and appreciation for the pipe organ, especially the Kotzschmar Organ, and to experience a live performance through the use of Kotzschmar Jr. Event #8049 Map + Directions
