Aug 08, 2015. The small offshore island village of Frenchboro host the Annual Frenchboro Lobster Festival. The annual event is one of the longest running and most successful summer events in Maine, a beloved tradition started in 1962 that welcomes back long-time visitors year after year, while also beckoning those who want to visit an authentic fishing village and eat some of the best lobster in the world in a unique intimate setting. The festival, set on the banks of Lunt Harbor with the mountains of Acadia looming in the background, features a boat ride through Blue Hill Bay and offers guests a chance to simply relax by the harbor, stroll the village roads, or hike the miles of scenic shoreline trails, plus many other activities. The stars of the show, however, will be lobster and the island. Frenchboro, located on Long Island eight miles from Mount Desert Island, is one of just a handful of year-round island fishing villages remaining on the coast of Maine. Established as a community in the 1820s, the island now has a population of about 70. The dinner includes lobster, chicken salad, hot dogs, cole slaw, homemade pies, and soda. The Maine State Ferry (passengers only) typically makes a special Frenchboro Lobster Festival run, leaving Bass Harbor at 9 a.m. and then leaving Frenchboro for the return trip at 3:30 p.m. For more information about the Frenchboro Lobster Festival call (207) 334-2922 or (207) 334-2902.
