Aug 13, 2016. The small offshore island village of Frenchboro host the Annual Frenchboro Lobster Dinner. The annual event is one of the longest running and most successful summer events in Maine, a beloved tradition started in 1962 that welcomes back long-time visitors year after year, while also beckoning those who want to visit an authentic fishing village and eat some of the best lobster in the world in a unique intimate setting. The festival, set on the banks of Lunt Harbor with the mountains of Acadia looming in the background, features a boat ride through Blue Hill Bay and offers guests a chance to simply relax by the harbor, stroll the village roads, or hike the miles of scenic shoreline trails, plus many other activities. The stars of the show, however, will be lobster and the island. Established as a community in the 1820s, the island now has a population of about 70. The dinner includes lobster, chicken salad, hot dogs, cole slaw, homemade pies, and soda. The Maine State Ferry (passengers only) typically makes a special Frenchboro Lobster Festival run, leaving Bass Harbor at 9 a.m. and then leaving Frenchboro for the return trip at 3:30 p.m. For more information about the Frenchboro Lobster Dinner call (207) 334-2922 or (207) 334-2902. Aug 19 thru Aug 21, 2016. The Great Falls Balloon Festival is the premier summer event of central Maine. It enjoys a national reputation as a first-class event and hosts visitors and balloonists from all over the US and Canada. This much-loved event is a destination for many visitors to the state of Maine. Established in 1992 by a small group of business people, civic leaders and friends, the festival's goal is to provide fundraising opportunities to local nonprofit groups while celebrating our community and promoting the Lewiston/Auburn area as a tourist destination. Based at Simard-Payne Memorial Park (formerly Railroad Park), in Lewiston, on the banks of the Androscoggin River, the festival has become a huge success, attracting crowds of approximately 100,000 visitors annually. The river, with the rocky Great Falls as its backdrop, provides a picturesque setting for the dozens of balloons which visit annually, including some special shape balloons.
