Jun 05, 2010. Note: The Sandy River Festival was cancelled in 2011. The Annual Sandy River Festival in the town of Strong offers lots of outdoor fun. Typical events (usually starting at 8 a.m.) include log rolling, a canoe relay and inner tube race, paddling experts, fly fishing instruction, and Ranger Rick's canoe, kayak, and water safety clinics will provide family entertainment all day. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and beverages will be available. The nine-mile river voyage from the Strong to the Fairbanks bridge on Route 4 is an idyllic paddle, even for the novice. Bring a lifejacket, sunscreen, bug spray, and a change of clothes. A shuttle transporting paddlers and gear back to Strong may be available (depending on funding) and if so will leave Fairbanks at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Donations may be required. Jun 11, 2011. 4th Annual Pirate Rendezvous The Mystic Pirates sail into the scenic midcoast towns of Damariscotta and Newcastle and take over the in-town area until 4 p.m., when they will fade back into history. A Pirate Bazaar located at the riverside Schooner Landing Restaurant & Marina will feature themed retail stands and daylong music and entertainment. Children will be able to enjoy a variety of games at the Capt. Kidd's Pirate Camp on Water Street. Both of these venues open at 10 a.m. Businesses and restaurants throughout in-town Damariscotta and Newcastle will also be in on the fun, with pirate themed specials and decor. When the pirates invade at high noon, children will be invited to participate in the defense of the town. Once the pirates have invaded and convinced all the townfolk and children to seek the riches of the lost treasure, the children will be involved in a day-long drama to find the hidden plunder that will include a Crew Muster and Pirate Costume Contest, and a Treasure Hunt that will take the children through businesses of the in-town area as they search for the Lost Treasure of the Mystic Pirates. Over 100 artists and craftsmen will line Main Street and Pepperell Square during the Saco Spirit Sidewalk Art Festival, transforming downtown Saco into a giant art gallery from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For 40 years artist have traveled from all over New England and beyond to participate in what has become for many exhibitors one of their favorite festivals of the year. The combination of historic buildings, flowers, friendly people and quaint atmosphere combine to create a perfect setting for artists to exhibit their work to thousands of visitors. This years Arts Festival offers visitors the opportunity to view a variety of artistic styles from all mediums and photography to pottery, sculpture and fine crafts. The 4th Annual Red, White and Blue Summer Fun Festival will be held on Saturday, June 25 at Bowdoin Central School (1460 Main Street in Bowdoin) to benefit the Mid Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross. The fun-filled day is a community fundraiser hosted by FHC, Inc. and the Cathance Center of Bowdoin and Bowdoinham. Beginning at noon and continuing until after a spectacular fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., this event will feature games and prizes, a wide variety of hands on activities, entertainment throughout the day, and a variety of concessions. The afternoon promises a true country festival atmosphere with a bouncy house, obstacle course, petting zoo, horse rides, games and a prize wall, giant croquet, a variety of fitness demonstrations including karate, Zumba, Silver Sneakers and more. There will be true festival fare including hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, sno-cones, fresh squeezed lemonade, strawberry shortcake and fried dough during the day, with the addition of sausage and peppers, root beer floats and ice cream served in a typical 50's and 60's style as we begin the festival's first Sock Hop and more!
