Hogs, Pies and Fireworks

May 28, 2011. Maine's summer season kicks off in Downtown Gardiner with the 2nd Annual Hogs (Motorcycles), (Pizza) Pies, and Fireworks Event. On Saturday, May 28th, the skies of Gardiner will be festive with the glow of fireworks, the streets rumbling with motorcycles and the air filled with the aroma of fresh pizza. Beginning at 6 p.m. on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend, there will be a motorcycle parade, followed by a pizza tasting competition, with 10 local businesses participating. At dusk, Gardiner hosts Maine's largest fireworks display. This year's ten mile motorcycle parade will start in the parking lot of Mike's Sidetrack Grill, then head West on Route 126 to the I-295 overpass. From there, Gardiner Police escorts will guide riders on to I-295 South to the next Gardiner exit, where they will then connect with Route 201 and ride East into Gardiner's newly renovated Waterfront Park. Bikers wishing to participate do not need to pre-register, but should arrive for line-up at Mike’s Sidetrack Grill, 469 Water Street, by 5pm. While the bikes are parading through town, businesses participating in the Best of Gardiner Pizza Tasting Competition will have their pizzas ready for sampling, in a "winner-take-all" battle for bragging rights as the best pizza in town. Once the votes have all been tallied, the coveted "Gardiner Cup" trophy will be awarded to the Peoples' Choice. Last year's winner, Dennis' Pizza, is confident they will be able to repeat last year's victory, which was won by a narrow margin. New to this year's event will be an inflatable obstacle course set up in the Waterfront Park, provided by the Maine National Guard. The course is designed for kids of all ages and will help all those pizza tasting aficionados work up an appetite. For more info email info@gardinermainstreet.org. Event #3936 |   Report Update
