Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation - Diamond Cove
Diamond Cove
Portland,
Maine
04106
Phone: (617) 283-7334
Jun 24, 2012. Share Our Strength will host Maine's Annual Taste of the Nation. Dine on delicacies from more than a dozen Maine kitchens. Sip wines throughout the evening from an array of different vineyards. In 2012, the event will take place in Diamond Cove on Portland's Great Diamond Island. The unique ambiance of the Diamond Cove is due in part to the history of the island. Initially an artistic retreat community that hosted visitors including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Harriet Beecher Stowe, Diamond Cove was converted almost entirely to a military base to defend Casco Bay at the time of the Spanish-American War. Known as Fort McKinley, the buildings were constructed between 1891 and 1907 and remained in active use until shortly after the end of WWII in 1945. Today, after undergoing a major restoration in the 1990's, many of the original buildings remain in place - the former Quartermaster's storehouse is now the restaurant - and are all listed in the National Register of Historic Places. VIP admission is from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. General admission is from 3:45 p.m. to 8 p.m. For info phone (617) 283-7334. Event #954 Map + Directions | Report Update
