One of the most exciting groups to emerge on the world music scene in recent years, the two-time Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir weaves a glorious vocal tapestry, sharing powerful songs of praise and remembrance ranging from traditional South African folk songs to contemporary gospel raves. The 26-strong choir, under the direction of David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, draws on the best talent from the many churches in and around Soweto. Expect earthy rhythms, rich harmonies, pulsating percussion, and a cappella gems all accompanied by live drummers. Her songs are filled with love, romance, and longing for the beautiful islands of Cape Verde. Born in Senegal of Cape Verdean parents, de Barros expresses through song the influence that French culture and music had in her life growing up in West Africa. In addition to the African- and Latin-flavored coladeiras and bluesy mornas common to Cape Verdean music, de Barros introduces another intoxicating rhythm, the funana, which is undeniably danceable and joyful.
