Please join us as we happily and joyfully bring these films to the Square! On March 5 we continue the series with Festival Express. A great concert film, this one follows a tour across Canada by train in 1970. Musicians including the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, the Band, Buddy Guy, and many others spent a week together on a train. They hardly got off except for the shows. J. P. Cormier with The Elliots - Unity Centre for the Performing Arts

42 Depot Street
Unity, Maine 04988
Phone: (207) 948-7469

Mar 08, 2012. Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, sideman, innovator, recording artist, award winner. His names are many, but underlying that is a young man with an ancient soul who has traveled the world for the past 23 years bringing his unique brand of joy to audiences wherever he goes. J.P. Cormier began playing guitar, self taught, at the age of 5 and quickly became immersed in the rich musical heritage of his Cape Breton roots. By the age of 9, he was considered a genuine prodigy and won his first guitar competition against 30 other players three times his age. By his mid-teens, it became obvious J.P. could play almost any stringed instrument he picked up. However it was his guitar playing which shone with his flawless executions of tunes he learned from records of giants like Chet Atkins and Doc Watson. At 16, Cormier recorded his first album, a collection of bluegrass instrumentals. With the project in hand, he worked his way across the U.S. festival circuit - performing for anyone who might take notice. These appearances led to a move to the U.S., and 10 years of session work, live appearances, and many memorable nights at the Grand Ole Opry. Carolina Chocolate Drops - Stone Mountain Arts Center

695 Dugway Road
Brownfield, Maine 04010
Phone: (866) 227-6523

Mar 09 thru Mar 10, 2012. This recent Grammy award winning band is getting bigger and buzzier, and after meeting the Chocolate Drops, they probably hate that. Because for them it is about the music and the tradition of that music. Rolling Stone said, "The Carolina Chocolate Drops are . . . revisiting, with a joyful vengeance, black string-band and jug-band music of the Twenties and Thirties - the dirt-floor dance electricity of the Mississippi Sheiks and Cannon's Jug Stompers." And that is very true, but they also have an edgy even urban at times accent, that makes their show so fun to watch and hear. They are touring a new album produced by Buddy Miller and we are grateful that we are along for their rise to stardom. Doors open 6 p.m., concerts at 8 p.m. Event #7242   Map + Directions   |   Report Update

Mar 10, 2012. Roots rock reinvented. Over the past three albums and five years, Toronto's Celtic rock band Enter The Haggis has found itself at the center of a grassroots success story ever teetering on the brink of mainstream success. From playing Celtic festivals to headlining them, and from the festival circuit to selling out multiple nights in rock venues, ETH has blazed a path with heavy and almost constant touring up and down the East Coast, to Canada, the West Coast and back again, winning over success one fan, one town, one region at a time. The band has made waves in the genre, landing high Billboard and iTunes World Music chart positions as well as major television appearances on shows like Live With Regis And Kelly, A&E Breakfast With the Arts and PBS' popular program Out of Ireland, with its multi-influence style of Celtic rock. Composed largely of transplants to the Seattle area, The Head and the Heart write and play songs that speak to the newness of a fresh start, of the ghosts left behind, of moving forward, all brimming with a soulfulness and hope for a better life than the one we've all been sold. Stylistically, think a folksy Beatles or Crosby Stills Nash & Young with more instrumental force. Catchy piano melodies stand side by side with a tight trio of harmonies, and solid minimalist drums, groovin bass, and plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps make the live show inspiring and really goddamn fun. The band's eponymous first album was self-released at the end of June 2010. Doors open 7 p.m., concert 8 p.m. Event #7893   Map + Directions   |   Report Update
