In this adaptation of Barbara Robinson's novel, young Grace Bradley has been asked to take over directing the pageant when the usual lady is injured. This unfortunately coincides with the disheveled, delinquent, and violent Herdman kids showing up at Sunday School to take advantage of the refreshments -and deciding they'll take over the pageant. Will the Herdmans learn about the meaning of Christmas or will the town go up in flames as they enact their proposed "Revenge in Bethlehem"? Find out at the Belfast Maskers waterfront theater. Opens Thanksgiving evening with a special "preview evening" price of $8. The show runs for two weeks, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7 with Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2. Tickets are available at The Fertile Mind, at the theater one hour before curtain, or by calling the box office: $5 for 12 and under, $10 for teens, and $15 for all others. Miss Julie - St. Lawrence Arts Center
76 Congress Street
Portland, Maine 04101
Phone: (207) 775-5568
Nov 27 thru Nov 29, 2009. Winterblue Theatre presents the classic "Miss Julie" by August Strindberg. Considered the father of modern drama, Strindberg wrote this riveting story of mutual seduction between a count's daughter and her valet in 1888, but its tumultuous give and take battle between the sexes holds just as much punch and ultimate tragedy for contemporary audiences. (The play was most recently produced on Broadway in 2005.) Adding to the sexual tension between Miss Julie and Jean as their flirtation builds to a fevered consummation on Midsummer Eve in Sweden, this production features the world-class, live music of Portland's own, Ed Pearlman of Highland Soles. Performances at 8 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. & 8 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Phone (207) 400-6338 for ticket information. Map + Directions | Report Update

Inspired by a simple, poignant letter written over 100 years ago by 8-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon to the editor of the New York Sun-and by the timelss editorial response printed on the front page of the Sun. Virginia wondered and wrote: "Dear Editor, I am eight years old. Some of my friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says if you see him in the Sun, it's so. Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?" Ed Mitchell, the Sun's editor, gives the assignment of answering Virginia's question to Frank Church, who, until his wife and baby died last Christmas Eve, was the Sun's best and most dependable reporter. Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus is a play for young and old, magically reaffirming life's highest beauty and joy-"the eternal light with which childhood fills the world.
