Maine Teacher Certification Reciprocity
Maine is a party to the Interstate Agreement on Qualifications of Education Personnel, 20-A M.R.S.A. 13901 et seq. This Interstate Agreement, developed by the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC), governs reciprocity between K12 educators and administrator in most of the states. In Maine, reciprocity is available if the following terms are met:
TEACHERS
1. Completion of an approved preparation program for the endorsement or certificate being sought with a formal recommendation for certification from the institution; OR
2. In the 5 years prior to applying for Maine certification, the applicant has 3 years of successful teaching experience under a valid comparable certificate in a state with which Maine is participating in the Interstate Compact.
ADMINISTRATORS
1. A 1 year, non-renewable Maine administrator certificate may be obtained if the individual has 3 years of administrative experience using the type of certification being sought, AND
2. The individual holds a master's degree, AND
3. The individual holds the same type of certificate from a state other than Maine.
For more thorough information about the rules and requirements for certification reciprocity in Maine, please see the "Routes to Initial Certification" posted by the Maine DOE, specifically Rule 4.2(B). For additional information about the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement, see Interstate Agreement.
