Loss of WEEI Programming from WAEI

By Jason FitzGerald: January 27, 2010

I used to revel during my morning drive, no wife, no work, just me and the guys from WEEI. Then one day I turned on the radio to find the master of conspiratory sports talk radio, Stephen A. Smith, from the left coast no less yelling about something while his producer mentioned something about alligator tears (most of us call them crocodile tears, but then again, what percentage of people can identify a crocodile vs. and alligator correctly in the wild) FYI, In terms of physical differences the easiest way to tell the difference between the two is that a crocodile has a very long, narrow, V-shaped snout, while the alligator's snout is wider and U-shaped; but I digress. As I changed the station, I thought to myself, this should be straightened out within a few days. Imagine my dismay when day after day I tuned in for a nanosecond before realizing the situation had yet to be remedied; knowing full well what the terrestrial radio landscape in Maine looks like, thinking to myself, things on the radio couldn't possibly get any worse. And then it happened . . . . I tuned in to find the once tolerated . . .then shunned . . . then tolerated, master of racist rhetoric Don "the walking corpse" Imus mumbling, guffawing, then mumbling some more about something I may have had interest in, but could not understand without some kind of translation legend. In short, I won't be listening to 97.1 or any of your stations anymore, nor will most of my friends if I have any kind of influence. I used to listen to WTOS regularly, but then it became obvious that they were catering to the ham fisted, mouth breathing portion of the population that is content to feast on Puddle of Mud, Nickelback, and other ground breaking artists of today. So now, I have no options on the radio except 850 AM where I can catch all of the WEEI shows when the signal is clear enough.

Other than that, it seems like this may be part of a larger conspiracy, the one spearheaded by Apple, frustrating people to the point where they don't bother with radio anymore, sooner or later we'll probably all be driving around in [crappy], white injection molded cars with fancy touch responsive components, with Steve Jobs' face stitched into the upholstery, that you can only by from one vendor, and they'll be programmed to play the latest in music fashion and state run radio programming. Wait a minute . . . Blueberry . . . Apple? Is there really a connection?

Currently listening to my ipod, awaiting rescue from the monotony by some Harrison Bergeron-like hero.

A lot of people would like to see things returned to how it was. The comments in the Bangor Daily web site, Twitter and Facebook also show I'm not the only one. I really enjoyed having big city radio coverage about Boston, and the Boston sports teams as well as the local area news since WEEI is covered through most of New England. If nothing else, Stephen A. Smith is pretty tough to take Monday morning at 6 a.m. I also just can't listen to LA Radio go on about the Lakers.

I know WEEI is still being aired on stations in Portland as I was in that area this weekend and my friends were listening to it there. If I can make one last request to Blueberry: Please just work it out for the people who depend on you to bring them real entertainment!

Thanks for returning Imus to the airwaves in Bangor. Your listener population appears to be growing quickly based on the 'word on the street.' I'm disappointed you cut Imus off at 9 a.m. Run the full show til 10 a.m.
