Maine Highways

Road and highway related issues in Maine range from road conditions, to I-95 renumbering, to entry from Canada and the vast network of private roads in northern Maine.

1. Road Conditions

Online map of road conditions and live traffic cams as provided by the Maine Department of Transportation.  By moving your curser over a road icon, the system will tell you whether the pavement is dry, wet or otherwise hazardous.  For live photos, click on the camera icon. Road condition info also can be obtained by telephone: In-state dial 511.

2. Interstate 95 Redesignations and Exit Renumbering

The Maine Department of Transportation has online resources explaining what has happened, and what will happen, with redesignations and renumbering on I-95.

3. The North Maine Woods - Private Roads - Travel from Canada

The North Maine Woods is over 3.5 million acres of forested land, and includes an extensive network of private roads.  Permits, which may be obtained upon entry, are required for travel on these roads.  The contact number is (207) 435-6213.   For those traveling to Maine from Canada, please note the following: "Through traffic from Canada into Maine or Maine into Canada is not permitted via the road system in NMW.  Recreationists may travel to their desired destinations within the area and then return to the country from which they entered.  Parties entering at one of the Canadian Border checkpoints must leave via the same checkpoint."  See North Maine Woods - Things You Should Know.
