Artist's Choice - Portland Museum of Art

7 Congress Square
Portland, Maine 04101
Phone: (207) 775-6148

Feb 03 thru May 29, 2017. The photographs in this focus exhibit all belong to the artist and collector Judy Glickman Lauder, who has spent her life immersed in photography. She is an acclaimed photographer herself, yet her joy in the medium began during her childhood, when she would model for her father, Irving Bennett Ellis. Lauder began collecting photographs over 40 years ago, visiting the studios of other artists whenever possible and finding community and friendship through photography, both as an artist and an admirer of the works of others. An active participant in the Maine Photographic Workshops (now the Maine Media Workshops) in Rockport, she began swapping photographs with friends she met there in the 1970s and '80s. As a result, one notable aspect of her collection is that it includes art by many of the Workshops' most illustrious alumni. Exhibit on display from Feb. 3 through June 4, 2017. Francis Orville Libby Exhibit - PhoPa Gallery

132 Washington Avenue
Portland, Maine
Phone: (207) 517-0200

Apr 12 thru May 27, 2017. A Keen Eye and Soft Focus, guest curated by Susan Danly, presents the work of Francis Orville Libby (1883-1961), one of Maine's first art photographers, a leading pictorialist, and an early president of the Portland Camera Club alongside the work of contemporary photographers who share some of his early aesthetic concerns. For over a century, from the turn of the 20th century to the 21st century of today, art photography has included a range of approaches. From detailed, sharp focus images in black and white to softly focused pictures in muted color, modern photographers have produced a wealth of images that convey mood, artful expression, and impressionistic views of our surroundings, both rural and industrial. The exhibition will highlight work by contemporary, Maine-based photographers Judy Glickman Lauder, Koichiro Kurita, Amy Parrish, Shoshannah White, David Wolfe among others, following in Libby's footsteps. Opening reception on Thursday, Apr. 20 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Curator's talk on Thursday, Apr. 27 at 5:30 p.m. Exhibit on display from Apr. 12 through May 27.
