Whatever Family Festival is a two-week-long Free Family Fun Festival, from mid-June through July Fourth, featuring the Kids Day in Capitol Park festivities with some 60 to 80 free events and activities. Whatever started in 1978 with a crazy Kennebec River craft race from Augusta to Gardiner to celebrate the recovery of the river and the vibrant communities surrounding it. In the 1990's we converted it to a "greener and cleaner" (and safer) celebration with emphasis on free activities and entertainment for kids. Many of the thousands and thousands of kids who attend Whatever's Kids Day are kids who will never get to see Disney World. Whatever is a special gift to the community by the businesses and organizations of the chamber. Gardiner, Augusta, Winthrop and surrounding communities come together during the Whatever Family Festival with 150 different events culminating in Kids Day in Capitol Park. Windjammers were the grandest of the merchant ships from the era, enormous sailing boats with several large masts designed to carry massive amounts of cargo from one continent to another. For centuries, the Boothbay Harbor Region has been a center of American shipping and shipbuilding, its harbor graced by elegant Windjammers as well as other commercial pleasure ships. Jul 04, 2016. The Stars and Stripes Spectacular is Maine's largest annual July 4th celebration, with activities and fireworks enjoyed by 50,000 to 70,000 spectators each year. The Stars & Stripes Spectacular concert and fireworks display will be held on Monday, July 4th with a rain date of Tuesday, July 5th. The event is free and open to the public. VIP tickets are available for $100 each and they include reserved seating in front of the concert stage, transportation to the Eastern Promenade on the Narrow Gauge Railroad, and a BBQ dinner. Opening ceremony at 7 p.m., the Patriotic Pops concert starts at 7:40 p.m. with the Portland Symphony Orchestra and special guest artist Melissa Manchester. The evening culminates with dazzling pyrotechnics, as fireworks arch over Casco Bay from Portland's East End Promenade at 9:20 p.m. Food vendors will be on site.All proceeds and donations directly support this non-profit event. A long-standing success over the years, The Blueberry Fair will feature the work of over 40 artisans and crafters from all over New England. They will offer a variety of art objects including paintings in different mediums as well as sculpture, photography, jewelry, pottery, porcelain and stoneware ornaments, hand-painted silk scarves, soaps, wood products, and much more. The Kennebunk Public Library will also be selling used books. The Fair will also include a special children's corner with entertaining musical activities planned. Lunch will be held between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and be offered both indoors and outdoors. On the menu will be New England Chowder, Crab Rolls, Hot Dogs and condiments plus a variety of Vegetarian selections from Frinklepod Farms as well as blueberry pie, blueberry muffins, pastries, and ice cream. Music by a ragtime band, a Scottish piper, a barbershop quartet or a guitar-playing college student may fill the air. Crafts made by the Organ Society ladies are for sale as well as jumbles, treasures, plants, baked goods, wood products and toys. The Uncommon Cafe serves hamburgers, hotdogs and sandwiches. Children's events and the annual dog show and parade round out the day's activities. The First Congregational Church's Summerfest began as an all-church affair in 1983, following many years as an annual summer fair held by the Ladies' Organ Society.
