Jun 17 thru Sep 04, 2017. Discover the wildlife and plants of Scarborough Marsh as you paddle the Dunstan River. Gliding through the marsh, you will be exposed to its many inhabitants, from the snowy egret catching fish along the edge of the river to the mummichugs swimming in the water. A trained naturalist will show you the numerous marsh plants and even give you a taste of an edible one. This tour is suitable for both novice and experienced paddlers. Jul 23 thru Jul 29, 2017. Fire, flood, and tornadoes. Stewarding natural resources is not an easy job. With warmer temperatures, wildfires are bigger, more frequent, more complex, and more destructive every year, endangering life, property, and natural resources. Climate change also brings increased incidence of flood and tornadoes. Students interested in fisheries, forests, waterways, and wildlife protection will learn about factors contributing to resource risk, how to plan for disasters and incidents, how to manage them when they occur, and how to recover after an incident. Cost is $900 per student before May 1. After May 1 the cost per student is $950. Includes all food and lodging. Cost for Commuter Student is $450 per student. Students entering grades 10-12 in the Fall of 2017 are eligible to attend. Spaces are limited so, please apply early. Jul 09 thru Jul 15, 2017. Explore the environment in Maine. Get your hip waders ready! Be a scientist for a week and do real fieldwork in Maine, from the hills to the sea. If you are interested in the formation, evolution, and care of our physical landscape, "the science behind it all and the relationship to living things," you need to spend a week with us at America's Environmental College.Come explore college and career opportunities in the field of Earth and Environmental Science with Unity College faculty and current students. Be prepared to go stream wading to collect and analyze water, sample, collect and analyze sediment cores, explore the geology of the Maine coast, and dabble in geomorphology, hydrology, and environmental chemistry. Activities include taking water samples from Maine ponds, traveling to the coast of Maine to explore tidal pools, rock identification on Mt. Desert Island, comparing soil samples and mineral content from the shores of ponds, streams and the coast. Also take a boat out onto scenic Lake Winnecook and fun activities in the evening Students entering grades 9-12 in the Fall of 2017 are eligible to attend. Cost is $950 per student until May 1. Jul 16 thru Jul 22, 2017. Explore Marine Biology at Unity College. Students passionate about the ocean and marine creatures will want to explore marine biology at Unity College. You will learn about plants and animals that inhabit 70% of the world's surface and will conduct hands-on experiments in our unique coral wet lab. Learn firsthand the impact of climate change on our world's oceans and explore career options in marine biology while on campus. Students will visit the ocean, learn microscope and laboratory techniques, and maybe even see a whale. Under the direction of Dr. Emma Perry, who is leading tardigrade research at Unity College, this is an experience you will not want to miss.Experience marine biology firsthand with whale watching off the shore Acadia National Park; dissect crustaceans during a lobster bake; visit Moose Point Park.
